I have tested this -- after removing the default route -- on
NetBSD-current, and I cannot reproduce the problem. However, I believe
that this problem was fixed quite some time ago, and a fairly exhaustive
search for death packets near several `magic' sizes has turned up no
problem such as the one you describe.
(It's conceivable that this is driver-specific, though not
particularly likely.)
