Serial holdings statements (or the lack thereof)

A number of us have been talking about some very confusing looking
serial records. Here's the example Emi came up with in last week's
open lab:

Number of holdings :0
TITLE :Toyota gijutsu = Toyota engineering.
LINKED TITLE :Continued by: Toyota technical review, issued in
both English and Japanese versions.
PUBLISHED :Toyota, Aichi, Japan : Toyota Jidosha Kogyo
Kabushiki Kaisha, -c1990.
PHYSICAL DESC :40 v. : ill. ; 26 cm.
LIBRARY COLLECTION / CALL NUMBER STATUS /DUE DATE
---------- ----------------------------------------------------
OK, but where is this thing? And what does "Number of holdings :0"
mean? If you call up the MARC record you can see that Barker owns the
thing.
Eric explained this to me, and I'll try to convey his explanation as
best I can. All unclassed serials look like this right now, until
copy sets are created for them. Since that will take a while, and
since we clearly can't go live with records that look like the above,
Serials is making a holdings statement for each such title. It will
show which library holds the title. In the STATUS column, it will say
"Series" or something to that effect (rather than "In Library.")
Eventually, copy sets will be created and as we've already seen from
Ellen's message these will not be in perfect chronilogical order.
Also, that holdings statement (the one I just described) will not go
away; it will appear along with the item information for the copy
sets. This is slightly sloppy but far from disastrous, in my opinion.
