Hello Ellen. I'm not at all sure I've grasped the full implications of this.
But, as far as my understanding extends, here are my thoughts:
I agree that this is an awkward situation. But a huge part of the awkwardness
is attributable to the fact that we've never had online serials
checkin/control/holdings or any type. Nobody, not even we fussy public service
types, could realistically expect everything to be instantaneously gorgeous. I
like the "For detailed information, please choose an item" line; that really
helped me understand what I was looking at. I liked the explanation you gave in
the summary holdings field. Speaking now only for myself, and on the basis of
only the one example, I think this is a viable interim step (even with the
understanding the the "interim"is, in your words, indefinite.) If you will
remind me which units barcode their serials I'll be very interested to look at
more of these. And, I think perhaps it would be a good idea to forward your
original message to CMG (if Marilyn hasn't already done so).
Other OPACkers may not agree with me; it's happened before.
