Preliminary work on expansion codes, after a meeting with Stephen,
Ray, and Arnie, resulted in the following structure...
XY-ZZZ
X is the library
we stayed with the 4th char from 049 codes
since 049 will still be in use for a while
a Aero
v Archives
e Barker
g CLSS
d Dewey
h Humanities
x HD
l Lindgren
m Music
y Physics
w RSC
r Rotch
j RVC
i S-P
s Science
p Space
Y is one of four optional broad categories
these are categories unlikely to overlap with
one another
g Government document
j Journal
s Score (only for use with Music)
t Thesis
ZZZ is the material type
these are categories shared by many XY combinations
we tried to strike a balance between short and clear
ref Reference
m Microfiche
mfilm Microfilm
disk Computer diskette
cdrom CD-ROM
map Map
v Videotape
vdisc Laserdisc video
audtape Audio cassette (only Music)
record Vinyl record (only Music)
cd Audio compact disc (only Music)
w Women Studies Reading Room (only Hum)
These combinations of codes make for a total of about 650 separate
codes. Of course, there will be fewer than 650 since some combinations
make little sense (g-map, for instance, would be pointless).
Any comments so far? I'll send out a list of combined codes soon.
