another training issue

Carol and I attempted to demonstrate the automatic select and view
option in opac parameters today. It didn't work very well, but we
suggested that this was the way to go along marking items so that you
could print them or sort them later for a bibliography. I thought I
would come back and create a sample search to demonstrate this, since it
didn't work too well for us in training.
Does anyone know how this works? I know that you can't return to a new
search or you lose the items you've "collected." But, worse than that,
I went along extending my search and "collecting" items, only to have
none when I asked the system to sort them for me. It just sorted the
current list of titles I was in. Am I completely dense or does this
just not work?
