I state in the Expansion Table proposal that our institution code will
always be MIT. It's been pointed out to me that we may, at some future
time, include other institutions (such as Dibner) in our catalog. The
question is whether this would cause problems for our Expansion Table.
No, I don't think it will. Let's take Dibner as a fictional case. If
someone starts creating Dibner records intended for our catalog, they have
two options: (1) create 852 tags directly, without any benefits of our
Expansion Table or (2) create 949 tags and add Dibner codes to the
Expansion Table.
If option (1) is chosen, they can obviously enter the DIBNER institution code
they need directly in the 852a. No problem.
If option (2) is chosen, then any Dibner Expansion Table codes we set up
would include DIBNER as the default institution code to be put into the
852a by the Expansion Table mechanism. Again, no problem.
Bottom line: I think the Expansion Table mechanism is flexible enough to
cover this case.
