There are two aspects to maintaining serials holdings: migrating the ones
we have and maintaining holdings in the future.

MIT would like to migrate 930 data into both 866 tags and item records.
The 866 would serve as a backup, we know its ugly, but we know it is
doable.

The 866 tags will be created just as they were during the first GMA,
except that 930i information will migrate to a public note subfield in
the 866.

The item records created during the GMA, which we call "summary items",
will not include barcodes, but they will include our summary holding
(930j) and note (930i) information in the preservation note (852g) field
of the item record. Every item record created in this way will also
include the value "Serial" in the call number suffix (852z) field. (Note
that this means "Serial" will display in the "Status" column of OPAC brief
and full displays instead of the default "In Library".)

The GMA will supply a space-slash-space between the 930i and 930j
information to set them apart from each other. For example, a 930i of
"v.1, no.1, Jan. 1995-" and 930j of "Latest on Ref" would become an 852g
of "Latest on Ref / v.1, no.1, Jan. 1995-".

We will remove 866 tags from public display and let the public learn of
summary holdings through the summary items attached to the bibliographic
record.

For ongoing maintenance we could use the Expantion Table mechanism to
create item records without corrosponding 866 tags from OCLC or we could
create and maintain copy sets on Advance. I recommend that we bite the
bullet and maintain copy sets as we move into the future. Even so, we will
still have to create summary item records for serials with call numbers
since the call number entered on a copy set record is not indexed.
