I talked to Michel Ridgeway this a.m. about whether we should use the
949 or the 852 field when we create mono. holdings on OCLC. Michel said
that we should use the 949 field since OCLC does not allow the $v in
the 852.
The 949 subfields correspond to the Advance 852 subfields as follows:
$a=Advance Institution code (from the Circ tables)
$b Advance sublocation
$g Local item note (aka preservation note but we will use it as our
equivalent to GLIS $n)
$h classification and cutter string (equivalent to GLIS $s)
$v single subfield for the entire volume hierarchy. Each hierarchical
level is indicated by a (space);(space)
E.g., $v Bd. 1 ; Teil 1
$p Barcode
NOTE: Unlike GLIS, Advance requires a separate 949 for each barcoded
item.
Michel cautioned us that there may be a length limite to the volume
hierarchy and advises that we test this VIGOROUSLY!
