There is now a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
feature on the Advance Training web page. This
small first edition of the FAQ is included below
for your inspection and approval. Any comments
and, of course, additional questions for possible
inclusion in the FAQ, are welcome.

Please visit the FAQ on the web page itself
(http://macfadden.mit.edu:9500/advance/faq).
Netscape provides easy and fun ways of
communicating with either Eric or myself about any
aspect of the FAQ and, more importantly, about any
of the myriad confusions surrounding that ol'
juggernaut itself, Advance. Hopefully, this FAQ
can be maintained, added to, and updated on a
regular basis.

> 1. Why doesn't my backspace key work?
>
> We still have a bit of a glitch in the basic setup of Advance on Emmy,
> our machine here at MIT. Emmy expects that a backspace key will
> generate a <Ctrl-H> while most of our terminals actually send a delete
> character instead. There are two things you can do to work around this
> problem: (1) just type <Ctrl-H> yourself when you want to backspace,
> or, (2) set up your terminal so that the backspace key sends the
> <Ctrl-H> backspace character. Eventually Emmy will be configured to
> recognize the more common (for us) delete character.
>
> To set up Host Presenter in order to use the backspace character
> instead of the delete character: (1) start your Host Presenter session
> to Advance, and once you are logged in, (2) click on the Setup menu,
> (3) click on the Emulator menu in the Setup window, (4) click on the
> Keyboard item on the emulator, (5) make sure your Backspace Key is set
> to Backspace, (6) click OK, (7) choose Save from the File menu in the
> Setup window, if you want Host Presenter to remember this change, (8)
> click OK again.

> 2. How do I get to our Advance database?
>
> Our Advance version of the Barton database lives on a machine named
> Emmy on the west side of campus. To get to Emmy you need to use
> telnet. Most of us telnet from Windows using Host Presenter. To do
> this, just start up Host Presenter and enter "emmy.mit.edu" as the
> host. You can also telnet from DOS by typing "telnet emmy.mit.edu" at
> a DOS prompt.

> 3. How can I get a GRSN search to work?
>
> In Advance our old Barton GRSNs are preserved. They can be searched
> using the "CN=" command. The trick is that you have to ask for a GLIS
> number and type "GLIS" in all captial letters. Let's say that I want
> to find the record that had the GRSN 258282 on the Geac 8000
> system...I would go to an Advance search screen and enter the command
> "CN=GLIS00258282". Note that not only is GLIS all uppercase, it is
> also followed by two zeros!

> 4. How can I print a report?
>
> Printing has not actually been set up yet on Emmy. This is one of
> Grant's top priorities and it should be rready soon. In the meantime,
> you can view a report on the screen and capture the text to a file,
> which you can print yourself from DOS or Windows.
>
> We won't explain everything about using reports in this FAQ; but the
> idea is to select your report (usually found in the CCR menu of your
> module) and answer all the questions the system may ask you about what
> you want included in the report. When Advance asks you if you want to
> print the report, answer NO! Really, answer no. Advance will then tell
> you to "hit any key to continue" and, when you do hit a key, it will
> proceed to dump the report to your screen. If you decide you don't
> want to see any more of the report, you can hit "Q" to quit back to
> the reports menu.
>
> To capture the report in to a text file, you should probably use Host
> Presenter to connect to Advance. Get to the point where Advance asks
> you to "hit anay key to continue", then choose Capture from Host
> Presenter's File menu. When the Capture window appears, choose
> "Continuous" and make sure to change the filename to something that
> makes sense and is easy to remember. Then click on OK. When you are
> back to your Host Presenter screen, choose Capture Off from the File
> menu. Now you can use Write, WordPerfect, or DOS commands to display
> and print the text file just created by the capturing.

> 5. What is a GMA?
>
> In Geac terminology, our current Barton system is called "GLIS". Our
> new Barton system will be called "Advance". A "GMA" is a "GLIS
> Migration to Advance".
>
> We will go through two GMA's during our transition to the new system.
> The first GMA has already taken place. We now have an Advance database
> that reflects our own Barton system as it was around the middle of
> December. We are using this data to confirm that the GMA did what it
> was supposed to do; and to specify what we need to do differently for
> our final product. This first GMA is a test-run.
>
> The second GMA, scheduled to happen during late May and into June,
> will be the real thing. We hope to work the kinks out of the system
> during the first GMA so that the second GMA proceeds without any
> serious surprises.
