Circ folks: Please see my message to Ridgeway on recalls, and his
response. Too bad! It's a bummer. -AP

Subject: a question on Recalls
Date: Thu, 09 Mar 1995 15:09:39 EST
Michel, a circ question for you. None of us can figure this out.
Scenario: a patron needs an item that was just charged out by another
patron, say, yesterday. Our policy is that, unless an item is needed
for reserve, the patron who has the item gets it for 2 weeks. The
default recall due date which we put in the system is "8 days hence",
which works in most cases. But in this scenario, to give the item a
due date of 8-days-hence is inappropriate. Need to give it a due date
of 13 days hence.
As far as we can tell, the only way to do the combination of: place
copy hold/recall/change default recall due date is this:
-once you find out that the item is out AND you'll be needing to change
the default recall due date, you have to exit to the main circ menu;
-from there, enter CREL
-then you get the recall display at which you must enter the barcode
number of the item being recalled [so the staff member should have
jotted down that number!], and then you get the opportunity to enter
the desired new due date.
-then you go back to the patron's COUT screen and place the copy hold.
If you place the recall and hold and THEN get into the CREL screen,
the system doesn't give you the chance to adjust the recall due date.
It just displays a message, "this item already recalled."
So, my question is, is this really how the system is designed? It
strikes everyone as very cumbersome. Is there an easier way to do
this type of transaction? The Guide is not helpful on this.
Thanks. -AP
(Grant, I'm sending you a separate report.)

You are correct in that you cannot change the due date from the
COUT/Item Holds menu.
The one thing that you can do is a SEARCH keyword from the CREL
recall display which will allow you to find the item without the
need to have noted the barcode number.
It may seem cumbersome to you, but the system is designed around a
default due date for recalls, not arbitrary changes to those
defaults.
