I agree that there are different agendas for different folks in building
indices.  May I point out that with hard disk costs so far below the cost
of printing, it is easy to make room for five or ten kinds of indices.
The kinds that particularly interest me are the ones that users can
contribute to as they use them.  Sharing such info over the Internet can
be very cost effective, especially when many are happy to contribute a
bit without specific compensation for the act.
