Hello,

Here at UCI we have been experiencing a problem with WinXP home and pro.
We have a linux box for a DHCP and Registration server. When a new user
plugs in and their MAC address is not registered they will receive a
bogus DNS address that resolves to the Apache Registration page. Once
they register, wait for 5 or 10 minutes, they can restart or do a simple
ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew.

Now, on all other OS's, including a bunch of XP computers, this works
just fine. The ipconfig /renew brings back the ip address again, gateway
and the correct dns. However, we found that not all XP machines will
release the dns address and keep getting directed to our registration
page.

We tried uninstalling the card, removing the tcp/ip stack, changing the
dns address in the registry, starting and restarting, releasing and
renewing....all to no avail. Nothing we do will get the new dns number
renewed. As an interim solution we simply enter the correct dns
manually after the resident registers. This is a weak work-around.

Digging through the MS Knowledge Base provides no answers either.

So.....finally...has anyone else come across this problem, and if
so....what's the solution??? Help.
