At Indiana University we also have 10,000+ resnet users. We've been doing
forced authenticated registrations coupled with dhcp for several years. As
others have mentioned it greatly simplifies the process of getting students
connected to the net quickly, yet also allows us to ensure that those using
the network have authentication to do so. Further, the ability to track
students, whether for security violations, or for rogue dhcp servers, or
trojans, etc. is much simplified by quickly being able to identify them by
name. We also use the registration as an opportunity to collect data on the
hardware and O/S versions the residents are using (everything we collect is
disclosed to them and they can choose not to have this information
collected, but most people don't care as long as we tell them it's for
support purposes.) We also hope to add an AUP to the registration program
next fall.

Subject: Forced Registration & DHCP
Hello,
I am from Rutgers University and we have approximately 10,000+ resnet
connections. We are using static IP addresses. I am anxious to switch to
DCHP and forced registration to make it easier on the Help Desk at the
beginning of the semesters.
There have been concerns about switching to DHCP because of the possibility
of students running their own DHCP servers, especially with Win XP. Can
anyone share if they have similar concerns and how you plan to handle it?
Also, feel free to list your experience with the pros and cons of DHCP vs.
static IPs.
Also, do you suggest forcing students to register their computer from day
one?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Keri
