At Saint Mary's we use DHCP combined with the Tut Systems SMS product. This is a gateway that requires the student to log in with their registered login name and password (via a web page) before they have any network access. If there's an incident, we look up the logs to see who had the given IP address at the
time of the incident, and there's the login name. We don't track MAC addresses or have any sort of machine registration. They already have the login name and password as this is issued to them at orientation. We also configure our resnet switches so all traffic is forced to the gateway. If a student has a
DHCP server running, it has no effect on anyone else. This also blocks Netbui, IPX, Appletalk, etc.
