Hi!
Two years ago we began limited resnet availability to conference
attendees and non-Tufts Students residing in the res halls during summer
session (or summah session as we say!). What do you charge per hook-up?
We haven't charged the users for support while they're here but this
year I did manage to scoop free campus housing for one of my RCCs during
the summer sesssion in exchange for 5 hours a week of support for the
conference folks! If other schools are charging for these services I'd
love to have their info!
What policies do you put in place if any, other than your standard
resnet policies?
We don't allow summer residents under the age of 18 to have an in-room
connection otherwise the rules are the same for summer residents as it
is for the regular academic term.
What security issues have there been if any?
Other than those annoying "copyright violations" we haven't had any
major security issues.
Do you have a special port enabling procedure?
Our ports are all live all the time.... we do require
authentication/registration to get an IP address. This presents a
problem when it comes to non-Tufts folks that are just here for a week
or two. Our authentication bounces off of our email servers, visitors
are not given email accounts. When our summer residents move in we go
out at a specified time and proxy register for anyone who wants to use
their connection. When we do this we put in the name of the machine
owner and either their extension or their cell phone number... just in
case we need them!!!
Because our program is still morphing so I'd be interested in hearing
what established summer support programs are doing also!
Best regards,
Judi Rennie
