You should also notice a big speed boost in browsing if you have removed
the IPX protocol from your network settings.
I've been using the tip someone mentioned about deleting that reg key
since June 2000 on WIn2k, and it works well for me. Some other people
recommend deleting the other key in that same branch for additional
improvements in speed.
The first key mentioned fixes a "feature/bug" in Win2k+ in which Windows
searches the folder you are attempting to open (including http:// and
ftp:// sites) for Task Scheduler tasks before displaying the folder or
page; this is why there is a noticeable delay. Deleting this key means
that Explorer will not search through the folder before first displaying
it.
The second (and only other key) in that branch does a similar thing with
lkooking for shared printers. I've deleted that key on my system without
any real problems, but I also don't use printer sharing, so who knows what
might happen on your system :)
