We are moving to DHCP now, but every year since we were running a resnet
their were students just filling in the wrong IP-addresses in the wrong
fields in their computer.

Suddenly PC's getting al the nameserver queries from other students in
their district. Or the network stopped because he filled in the
IP-address of the gateway instead of his own. And he didn't run any
routing software so he didn't know what to do with it. And lately
students running a backend network zo their computer connected to resnet
does routing and knows what to do with traffic for the outside world.
