But....but....but....their printer and serial cables are
gold-plated.....that means their stuff has to be better, right?  =P

Never underestimate Americans' affinity for shiny objects.

However, as we all know the real test for quality is which one weighs more.
I remember a friend of mine's TV remote (RCA, I believe) which had these
lead weights inside the case....

I can't speak to the Belkin Ethernet cards, however, last year we had fits
with the Belkin cables our bookstore was selling. They ended up buying them
back from students and selling the ones we had told them to sell in the
first place (the ones our telecom group bulk orders that were much less
expensive and higher quality). The contact depth tolerance on Belkin's
RJ-45 connectors was off just enough that in many cases they did not make a
good connection with the Netgear cards and the data jacks on the wall.
Incidentally, part of the blame probably lies with the Netgear cards as
well, since the RJ-45 receptacle on their FA-310TX NICs is not quite as
deep as some other manufacturers' cards, e.g. 3Com. So much for "standards"!
