We have had great luck with Linksys ethernet cards, for both laptops and
desktops.  They are fairly cheap (i've seen them for 10dollars at best buy
before rebate) and we've had very few problems with them.

As far as quirks go... everything has quirks.

ps.  oh, the 10 dollars is for desktop cards... usually the laptop ones
are around 48.00
