In the VIMS environment we supply "home space" to students and
faculty running Windows based systems from our Solaris based servers
using Samba. This has worked for Windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT and 2000.
We have been experimenting with Windows XP to see if we can support
it on our network. We have a "show stopper" with the Samba based
files. Using the browser or the Start run command the "users name"
comes up hard coded as "guest" and is greyed out. If we use the
command window and issue the netstart command it works fine, but that
is not something we want to train all the users to do.
We are using version 1.9.3 (I think) of Samba. We have seen
speculation that 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 "works fine". Can anyone confirm that
going through the upgrade (during the semester) would solve the
Windows XP problem?
