In a previous life (when I was in the Ag. School here at Purdue), I
set up IMP to support 1500 users. IMP has the ability to use multiple
IMAP or POP servers, which we had to have. About half of our users
were on a Netscape IMAP server on campus, and the rest were in the
extension offices throughout the state, and used IMAP servers located
in these offices.

We ran one central IMP server to access about 100 IMAP servers, from
a single Sun Ultra-10. It seemed to scale quite well. IMP is written
in PHP, and was quite easy to tweak to fit our environment. It does
work best with a database like MySQL as the backend.
