Information Systems is interested in extending MITnet service to all
students wherever they live... and to faculty and staff. Our priority
is for connecting ILGs, then undergraduate dorms, then graduate
housing, and then everyone else. Currently we have funding approved
for the ILGs and undergraduate dorms. Plans are being developed for
extending service to graduate students. Currently only Ashdown House
and Green Hall have the necessary wiring installed in all the student
rooms. IS is extending 5ESS telephone service to the rest of the
graduate houses and, as part of that project, wiring for MITnet
service will be installed.
So, pending approval of funding, we will extend MITnet to graduate
dorms. There is no schedule at this time - we are just trying to
network the students 4000 at a time!

So now that I've hopefully answered a question, let me ask one. Many
people equate having MITnet service to having "Athena". What do
people mean when they talk about having "Athena" where they live?
Clearly a network connection is part of this but students will have to
provide some sort of computer to plug into the network. What do you
_want_ to do once you've connected your computer - what do you _need_
to do from where you live? When you think about having "Athena", do
you expect to have every feature and service that is available when
you are in the W20 Athena cluster? Are there things that you want to
be able to do (besides eating pizza!) that you can't do in a public
Athena cluster?
