We have a 2000 Domain here and use Exchange/Outlook for email, et. al.
We caught the issues with XP Home when a student got a computer
mid-semester and couldn't login to the domain, etc.
We immediately recognized that this would be a big problem, both now and
next year and drafted a letter to students and parents. A copy of the
letter was put in every student's mailbox, as well as being sent to
their guardian. We figured the more coverage, the better. I have gotten
a few calls from parents that wanted more information, but I haven't
heard much in response.
Basically I am telling people that they won't be able to login to the
domain. What that means is when they go to use their network drive they
will have to login. When they go to use Outlook, they will have to login
again. They still get a connection and will be able to use email, but it
is more complicated for them to do so. Mostly I think it will be more of
a nuisance than anything else. Our students aren't even aware of the
active directory and that they can search it from their computer, since
they are trained to use our portal for people searches.
I imagine that we will have to explain this to most of the students that
show up with XP Home in a couple of weeks, despite our efforts to tell
people, but there is only so much you can do.
