I guess the first thing I would ask is what kind of historical data? There
are a variety of products that can do a good job of trending your data
depending on what you wish to monitor. MRTG and Cricket are two that come
to mind and due to their open source have been made to work with a wide
variety of products. These two products can get you historical data for
utilization and pretty much any statistic that your equipment has an OID
for. We are currently getting ready to implement server monitoring with
our MRTG installation to keep track of cpu utilization, memory utilization,
and hard drive space usage. If you just want to monitor whether a device
is up and running or not you could check out a product from IP switch
called WhatsUP we use that to monitor uptime on all of our resources here
at Ferris and most of the time works quite well.

We're looking into replacing the Network Management software that we use to
monitor and control our Routers and switches. We currently use Aprisma's
(aka Enterasys, aka Cabletron) Spectrum 6.0 product. It's a never ending
battle to model devices, and even some of the Cabletron devices don't model
correctly.
What would other people recommend looking at?
Obviously we will look at HP Open view, just because of name recognition.
Our Cisco rep has suggested that we look at CiscoWorks2000.
