I actually ran into a similar problem several weeks ago.  A student was
reporting the same kind of problem with accessing certain web sites.  I never
had a chance to look at the problem machine, but the student did report back
that they had a virus.  Once the virus was removed she was able to access all
web sites again.  Unfortunately the student did not give me the specific name
of the virus that caused the trouble.  But it may be worth looking into as a
possible cause.
