Geneseo's Library is currently running a laptop program that sounds a
lot like the one you are trying to demo.

Some things we've run into:
1. Charging batteries:
Depends on the brand of laptop you are using. We use Dell's.
Although very rugged and stand up to the wear and tear of student abuse
it only holds 2 batteries and you can only charge them in the laptop
itself. They do not offer a charger or plan on ever making one. If you
go with IBM they do offer a 2 battery charger for $150 however their
laptop only holds one battery at a time.

2. DeepFreeze works great on win98 or 2000 machines but here's the
problem we've been having. On laptop it takes forever to reboot b/w
uses. What we ended up doing is keeping our ghost image on CD and just
refreshing the machines once a week that way.

3. Signing out laptops and keeping track of them: Working with the
library has been helpful on this one. We keep all of our laptops in a
cart behind the Circulation desk at the library and another cart at our
HelpDesk. Our laptops get signed out as if they were a book or reserved
item and are kept track by the library's system. We offer a 3 hour loan
and a $5 charge (over due fine) for every hour the laptop is returned
late. The batteries in the laptops last for 4 hours so that offers the
student 3 hours of use and an hour recharge time for the battery.

We have been running a laptop sign out program now for 3 years so if you
have any further questions I'd be glad to help out.
