Lindsay,
Here at Luther, we have been using Ghost and Ghost Multicasting in our labs
for a couple of years. We use Ghost in combination with a laptop and large
firewire hard drive to recover single workstations and multicasting to
reimage whole labs in bulk when there are changes to the
image. Multicasting works great to take care of a whole lab in one fell
swoop. However, it has large implications on network performance. Quite
simply multicasting gobbles up network bandwidth. A few things that we
have done to get around this problem include . . . imaging at odd hours or
dragging around a couple of switches so that we can create a temporary
network that is removed from the rest of the world. I might suggest a
conversation with your network administrator to see how multicasting will
work within your campus network architecture.
We have also been experimenting with Ghost 7's centralized management
console which will hopefully allow us to reimage lab computers without
having to get up from our seats at the Help Desk. I believe that you could
also do things like scheduling reimaging.
Sorry, no experience with XP here.
