We are also in the process of eliminating AT on our core network. We still
allow AT access within a building, but when the project is complete we will
no longer route AT.
For file access -- Any Mac running OS 9.x or above can use AFP (AT over IP
basically) to access files on another Mac, a Wintel box with Serivces For
Macintosh enabled, a Linux box with an AFP server running, a Netware server
running Native File Access, etc. SMB is another viable option. It's native
in OS X, but can be used via DAVE in 8.x and 9.x. We use a combination of
both. Our central file storage for students, faculty and staff is located
on a cluster of Linux boxes that can be accessed from AFP and SMB.
For printing -- We currently use the Prosoft Client (IPX) for accounting
purposes, but you could also LPR or DAVE.
