I'd like to join the resnet discussion list, and incase I'm
sending out this letter to the discussion list itself, I'll share with
you what I found out from New England Telephone yesterday.

I am an off-campus commuter student. And seeing resnet being
built has filled me with the desire to join as well. Especially
during those cold weeks in December and January. I inquired about
getting a connection for my house and the people I spoke to at IS told
me that I would have to pay about $350/month for a leased line, which
is a bit above our budget.

In desperation I called the ISDN office of NET, and found much
to my delight, that residential customers of ISDN are billed much like
residential customers using normal telephones. It was a normal
installation fee, and a low monthly fee. Besides the $8/month
connection charge , there was a $5/month/Bchannel, and a $15 circuit
charge. They didn't seem to have anything like calling plans, so all
calls were metered at the same rates as analog calls.

ISDN has atleast 3 channels, the way NET has implemented it.
One 16Kbps for Telephone handshaking and interfacing with NET. Then
2 others at 64Kbps each. One is normally used for voice, but doesn't
need to be.

Obviously if one could get an ISDN connection, it would be
plenty fast enough to run X over, and even fast enough for a few
ftp's. According to the woman I spoke to MIT is getting primary NET
ISDN service, which would allow the rest of us to call up MIT. She
didn't know which department was getting the service. Also she
explained to me that not everyone can get ISDN service. The central
office needs to be outfitted for it. I live in Roxbury and she
explained that even though Roxbury doesn't have service they could
run a line out fom the SouthEnd Cetral Office, as long as it was no
more than 4 miles.

I hope this has been informative. Enjoy.

THe NET ISDN office's number is (617)743-5630. If you notice there
will be no ringback from that office when you call. ISDN doesn't
have ringbacks, neither does it supply a dialtone. Its a whole new
world out there.
