Robin,

I have seen the same symptoms on at least a dozen computers on our 10baseT
Full duplex ethernet network, though it has been a mix of OS's (95,98,ME..).
Using the fix posted on Resnet before (remove Winsock2 key, and then
uninstalling and reinstalling dial-up networking) has always cleared up the
problem.

From talking to students who have had this problem, it appears to occur
right after updating a web application such as AOL Instant Messenger on
their computer. We use Mcafee Viruscan and it is not picking up any virus.
I'm not sure if it is a virus or just bad coding on AOL or Microsofts part.
I've been going on the assumption that it is not a virus, but at the same
time, not every student who updates Instant Messenger has experienced this
problem...

I hope this helps

Subject: IP address but no TCP/IP function?

Hi all,

One of our student consultants who does repair work for us has recently
noticed an interesting (and concerning) trend in regards to computers
brought in for repair. I will copy below his remarks about the problem. All
of the computers he refers to
belong to students who live in the dorms and are registered on our dorm
network.

Please let us know if you have experienced similar issues or have any
suggestions.

Thanks!

In the past week, I have received 5 computers that DO get ip addresses but
no internet applications (TCP/IP) function. IE reacts as if there is no
internet connection (ie:
>cannot find page errors, etc) while the most distinctive symptom of the
problem is the error message First Class gives which is "Could not open a
network socket."

coincidence. When I came in to work the next day and we had 5 machines with
this problem, I no longer see that as chance.

and reinstalling EVERY windows file) will fix this problem. On the other
hand, this is a timely procedure and not a very good long time solution. I
can reinstall Windows for
>every person that comes in but they can just as easily contract the virus,
if it is a virus, again.

with this problem are running WINDOWS MILLENIUM.
