Rachel,

I put a little bit of time into trying to do a WinPE partition when we star=
ted moving to SCCM, but didn't get far, and gave up when it turned out that=
, despite appearing to use the MAC address as the unique identifier when a =
new computer connected for the first time and needed OS deployment to begin=
, SCCM was actually first looking at SMBIOS UUID, which is NOT unique on th=
e Macs. Using SCCM to deploy the OS to Apple hardware is not possible at t=
his point, as far as I can tell. Maybe it will change with SCCM 2012.

In the end I am deploying (via DeployStudio) a nice fat image (pushing 70gb=
used on the disk once it's installed) but that image is built using packag=
es from SCCM, so I will still get to take advantage of reusing any packages=
that don't need to be upgraded, and can push changes and fixes to the lab =
machines via SCCM after they are deployed. We had one model of Dell that r=
efused to take the image for some reason, and I was able to build a new ima=
ge (~100 apps installed) in a day, while I was mostly doing other things an=
d SCCM was plugging along installing stuff.

That's an idea. I had trouble finding information about that, so I had give=
n up. I finally found something on twocanoes, though: http://www.twocanoes=
.com/forums/index.php?p=3D/discussion/63/anyone-have-tips-on-automating-a-r=
estore/p1 . Will give it a try. Thanks!

I'm still interested in the WinPE idea as a future possibility. We're movi=
ng from Ghost to MDT/WDS (and eventually SCCM, I hope), and it would be nic=
e to have the ability to deploy thinner images & packages to the dual-boot =
machines around campus.
