STC 2012 Wrapped Up - last one of these I ever do! :)

So, we all survived! I do consider that to be an achievement of epic
proportions! While this isn't the first big multi-day event I've been involved with
or have organized, it's still an epic task!

Personally, I'd like to take a few seconds . . .

My thanks go out to my team-mates! Matt was absolutely tireless during the
event. He was everywhere dealing with everything. When my fuel level ran to
zero, his was still up there. Karmel was the mistress of detail, keeping us on the
list and making sure we didn't miss those little things that were the marks at
which we were shooting. Thank you both!

Thanks also to the student workers. Everyone saw them running around - they
were our hands and feet. We honestly couldn't have done it without their work.
They had the energy that often we lacked, and we took advantage of it! Well,
who wouldn't?

My thanks also go to Mike Lang and Ron Riggio - the keynote was a massive
success. I heard a couple of people say that it was a: one of the top three
keynotes ever, and b: the best keynote ever. I find it somewhat ironic that
Mike didn't think he'd have enough to say to fill 45 minutes. . . and then he and
Ron went on to fill 1:15 with another half hour for questions. Mike's candor,
wit, and straightforward comments really did set a great tone for the
conference - and his haircut absolutely was perfect as well. :D

I'll be working on the presentation and keynote speaker videos after the
Independence Day holiday, but thank you a TON to Cisco for donating the use
of over a half-million dollars of equipment plus a ton of Juan's time to getting all
of the videos. Many of them are at the link he provided, but many of them are
on a different link - between Juan and myself, we'll get them completed,
compiled, and (groping for another c-word that fits. . . oh well) ready for
everyone.

My thoughts on the conference:

Heck, I barely remember it! ROFL - obviously I didn't go to any of the sessions.
I tended to be running around while they were going on.

But I enjoyed the entire time! I enjoyed the brewery crawl - and thank you to
all of you who went with us. Cyndi (my wife) really enjoyed it as well. SO GLAD
we got an air-conditioned bus, finally! The expressions on peoples' faces were
excellent as they tried Serpent Stout, Deliverance, and other "chewy" and rich
beers!

The Pub Quiz was absolutely a blast. Thanks, Matt, for whipping up the
questions and for MC'ing it.

Overall, my goal was to do all of the little things that we, as hosts, can do. I'd
like to think that we succeeded - and even had some ice-cream left over! Who
would have imagined that!?

Closing thoughts, on my part (and tis just me, so. . .)

This conference is OUR conference. It's for us, by us, and of us. WE need to
publicize this to our peers and friends at ours and other colleges. Let's make it
our goal to get all of those who missed this year's (and there are at least 100
of those from the past two years. . .) and to get a few others, each, to come
from a campus close to ours. If we each get one, well, heck, that covers a
LOT.

Presenting - first, Purdue hosts - don't! :D There's a reason why the Yale hosts
didn't present last year (okay, Adam co-presented. . .) and that's because it's
insane. It took a lot out of Matt and myself. . . so just say no.

Second, the rest of us. . . DO IT. It's FUN. It doesn't have to be terrifying -
you can team up with people to do a panel, which lessens your load a TON.
Several of us are planning to do an on-going "open house" where we will help
you develop your ideas into a presentation - and even match you up with
someone who can team with you. . .

Third, be creative. I'm planning to team up with someone who will be un-named
(until she decides to name herself) and do a (cage-match) presentation where
ONLY ONE of us will leave the room ALIVE! Okay, it won't be to the death, but
it will be fun! :D Now - does Purdue have a cage? Hmmm. . .how to get that
through checked baggage?

In any case, Purdue is "only" 11 months away. . . you have NO idea how fast
that time will go by. Start your plans now!

Thank you all for a successful and fairly smooth conference!

Mike Malsed
