Hi Jim.

I do not administer our moodle instance here but I believe the admins
here created a completely separate version 2.2 server and are planning
on piloting some faculty on it this Fall/Spring then using it as the
production server starting next summer by creating all the classes as
empty shells and letting faculty into the old server if they want to
move content... it is not the most elegant solution but from what I have
heard there is no easy transitioning from a version 1.9 server to a
version 2.2 server (but don't quote me on that).

One thing you could try if the 1.9.12 is a virtual machine is make a
clone of it and change it's name and IP and test away at it until you
get the steps down.
