Echoing what has been said by others, the ability to provide a location on
the
answering PSAP screen is a state requirement for wireline calls. In
California,
the legislature (not the PUC) considered and rejected a proposal to require
location information inside a campus where the phones are hosted on a PBX.
The legislature seemed to take the position that this would be an unfunded
mandate.
In california, I was told that more than 2/3 of 911 calls are now coming
from
cell phones. People grab whatever is the most convenient when they want
help. So RedSky's opinion not withstanding, providing location info is less
useful than it used to be. The trend toward using cell phones is so strong
that
UC Davis pulled out all their outdoor blue light phones because the number
of
emergency calls was low.
