Subject: [RESNET-L] Library Information Commons Layout Questions
We are currently evaluating the layout of service offerings in our Informat=
ion Commons and would like to see how others are setup and get any feedback=
that you would like to share.
Are IT Services and the Library one organization or separate entities?
IT and the Library are separate organizations. IT reports to the VP for Fin=
ance and Business. The Library reports to the VP for Academic Affairs.
Do you have an information commons in your library?
Yes.
Do you have an IT Help Desk in the Information Commons?
Kinda? We have a "branch" of our Helpdesk in the Library, though not necess=
arily in the "commons" (though I don=92t think we have a traditional librar=
y "commons", but I also don't quite understand what is means by "library co=
mmons").
Where is your IT Help Desk located in relation to other service desks like =
the Library reference and circulation desks?
The TechStation (our library has "stations") is in the lower level of our 3=
floor library. The space it's in is called the TecHub and is meant to be a=
more collaborative space where students can talk and be more "noisy" than =
what one would expect in a library. The reference desk is called the InfoSt=
ation. That and circulation are on the first floor.
For example are the combined? Do students first see the IT help desk or the=
a library service desk like reference or circulation? Etc.
Students first see the InfoStation and circulation when entering the librar=
y. Library staff refer students with tech questions to the TechStation, whi=
ch is staffed by IT student employees and GA's.
What other IT related services do you offer in your information commons?
Not sure if this counts as "other", but we offer wireless support, public c=
omputer/printer support, mobile device support (such as email setup), gener=
al tech questions, general library (such as directional) questions. Anythin=
g that can't be easily resolved there is referred to the main Helpdesk.
Are these other services co-located with your help desk or are they separat=
e service areas?
These services are all located at the TechStation (these services are all a=
lso available at our main Helpdesk where we also offer more support for stu=
dent computing/technology needs).
Do you offer IT application software training and tutoring services? If so,=
where are these located?
Some software training is available through our department's trainer. This =
is generally only for faculty and staff. She usually holds classes in one o=
f our computer labs or will meet the user in their office or in a lab for a=
one-on-one session.
Thank you.
