Subject: Library Information Commons Layout Questions
We are currently evaluating the layout of service offerings in our Informat=
ion Commons and would like to see how others are setup and get any feedback=
that you would like to share.
Are IT Services and the Library one organization or separate entities?
No, they are separate entities.
Do you have an information commons in your library?
Yes. It's about 8 years old and we are in the process of working through a=
'refresh' of the space.
Do you have an IT Help Desk in the Information Commons?
Yes.
Where is your IT Help Desk located in relation to other service desks like =
the Library reference and circulation desks? For example are the combined?
Our Support Center/Help Desk is located as you walk into the Information Co=
mmons. They share a desk with the libraries circulation staff.
Do students first see the IT help desk or the a library service desk like r=
eference or circulation? Etc.
Students first see the Support Center and the circulation folks.
What other IT related services do you offer in your information commons?
We staff our Information Commons 24 X 7 with computer lab consultants who =
assist customers with software questions, maintain the lab, (clean desktops=
, keyboards, monitors, troubleshoot problems) fill printers and change out =
toners, clear printer jams, maintain printer supplies and initiate orders f=
or supplies, help customers set up print jobs for large format printing (pl=
otters) report problematic computer issues or security issues, etc.
Are these other services co-located with your help desk or are they separat=
e service areas?
Our lab consultants are just around the corner from our Support Center at a=
separate desk. The lab consultants share a large desk with the libraries =
reference staff. However they are in close enough proximity that they can =
easily collaborate on any issues.
Do you offer IT application software training and tutoring services? If so,=
where are these located?
Our IT department does offer software classes for students, staff, and facu=
lty that is offered by our IT Training group.
We are working on a plan for our lab consultants to begin offering some one=
-on-one software tutoring services to students in the computer labs.
