It all depends on where the student is going and what info (bandwidth) the =
student wants to transmit.

I have personal experience with Iridium and Inmarsat phones through previou=
s jobs and boy scouts.

When I was using the Inmarsat phones the were a bulky (laptop size), requir=
ed a lot of power (short battery life) and needed to be aimed.

The Iridium phones I used were just big cellphones. During the busy FL hurr=
icane season a couple of years ago we used them as a backup to our cell pho=
nes as the cell system went down regularly. The initial cost is quite high =
($600 to $1200) but you can find monthly plans that include 10 minutes for =
as low as $35.
You can rent Iridium phones for a reasonable price.

I have no experience with Spot but from all I hear it is great for text mes=
sages.
For higher bandwidth data communications Inmarsat BGAN terminals are great =
but very costly....

If the student is traveling outside North and South America Thuraya is anot=
her option to consider for voice/data sat coms.

With all satellite communication it is important that you have a clear view=
of as much sky as possible. So don't stand near tall buildings or under tr=
ees. You can use most sat equipment inside tents as long as the tent is not=
 wet.

The cheapest solution is to get your amateur radio license and just use HF =
radio or any of the 10+ amateur radio satellites.... ;)

Subject: Satellite Communicator recommendations?

Hi all,

I have a student who's interested in purchasing a satellite communicator, a=
s she will be traveling through some fairly rural areas this summer on a re=
search fellowship. She's specifically interested in the Spot Connect becaus=
e it (supposedly) works well with iPhones. Any recommendations, warnings or=
information I should pass on to her?

http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=3D116

I have no experience with these and am hoping that maybe someone on here do=
es!

Thanks,
Erin Scott
