Newton,
Unusual question because MSE updates itself automatically. It even says on the Update tab, "Security Essentials updates your virus definitions automatically to help ..."
Mine is always up to date (actually 1 day behind). I never get my updates through Windows Updates. Even when it's offered, I do the updates via the program instead.
I have Windows 7 on my computers where I test MSE and just the default installation of MSE.

Subject: Re: Switching to Security Essentials
I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials on my wife's PC and Windows laptop for a couple years. (I am a Mac user but she is a realtor and must have Active X and IE to access a local MLS). Anyway, MSE has done very adequate virus protection. However, all updates to MSE are posted by Microsoft as optional updates. I don't allow optional MS updates on her machines, but I do automatic updates of critical updates. I heard rumor that there was something that could be done to make MSE updates post as critical updates. I have Goggled that issue but find no answers.
Does anyone know how to make MSE updates post as critical updates such that they will happen automatically if a machine is setup to auto update critical MS updates?
