Last year, our ResNet pipe from our ISP was 150Mbps for approximately 2300 =
students. They were maxing out the bandwidth between approximately 7pm and=
2am. For this year (semester that started in January), the decision was m=
ade to increase the bandwidth from 150 to 600Mbps. With unfettered access,=
our ResNet students are now using, on average, 300-325Mbps between 7pm and=
2am, with lesser amounts during the rest of the day. We have experienced p=
eaks as high as 400Mbps, but usually for short periods of time.

I suppose I'm talking first about the size of the pipe coming into ResNet, =
rather than a calculation of bandwidth available at a given end-point (that=
, for us, is yet another discussion). I'm reaching for a minimum or maybe a=
medium standard of ISP bandwidth per, say a thousand resident students.

Are you talking about wired or wireless? The calculation methods would be d=
ifferent, depending on the mode of access.

Colleagues
We are in the midst of expanding our residence population and working on st=
andards of service.
Does anyone use a formula for calculating minimum or optimum bandwidth for =
ResNet, such as bandwidth per resident student, or a similar approach?
