Hey Larry,
What is your network environment? We are total Cisco now. In fact, up until last summer when we replaced our 3Com fiber switches with Cisco fiber switches, we had NO problems with allowing personal wireless routers in our family housing and needed to for the same reasons as you. Now, those same wireless routers seems to be causing network drops all the time in family housing. I need a solution desperately or we will have to deploy port security and kill all of those routers over there for good. And I say that if we have to do that, we might as well take our investment in that housing and put it on a BBQ and set it on fire.

Officially we prohibit personal wireless routers because they do often interfere with the University wireless. Unofficially, if it's not causing any issues, we don't shut them down, especially in the family apartments we have that have very limited wired ports and no wireless yet. We have had personal routers become rogue DHCP servers and knock other students off the network, those folks get shut down right away.

Do any Universities allow students to bring their own wireless routers and if so do you have policy on them
