For years we had issues with ports in our Residence Halls going bad due to
ESD, requiring the replacement of entire line cards.

In most cases the port would show link, but no address would appear in the
MAC address table for the port.

The switch vendor blamed it on our cable claiming that it was static build
up on outer jack of cable.

When it started we were replacing 10-20 line cards every fall. It's
finally slowed to a point where we haven't had any in the last two years..
(knock on wood).
