Hi, Jan et al.:

On our annual student survey, we ask students how important it is for
them to have a computer cluster in (or very close to) their residences.
Typically more than 80% of undergrads indicate that this is 'very
important' or 'important' to them. One of the primary reasons is having
access to a 'study space away from room'. Because most Stanford students
have laptops, one of the features in our spaces that they appreciate
most are the large-screen monitors on our managed computers, and some of
our spaces have large-screen displays specifically for laptops and areas
for small group work.

My sense is that, regardless of what technology is present in the
lab/cluster/study space, the space itself will retain high value to
residents.

A summary of our most recent (2010-2011) undergraduate survey is at:
http://acomp.stanford.edu/surveys/2010_2011_undergraduate#residence
and I'm happy to share more information about it if anyone is interested.

Thanks,

Beth
