A few years back, we made the decision to remove labs from our dorms. We
had a small handful of complaints, but not near the backlash you might
expect. Overall, we've found that almost all our students bring their own
computer, and those that don't still have access to other computers in our
Learning Commons and in other labs around campus. The only disadvantage is
they don't have 24 hour access.
When we first made the transition, we left a few computers scattered in
some of the common spaces in the dorms. At this point, though, we simply
have a printer in each dorm that students can print to after installing a
package on their computer (we're using Pharos Uniprint for that). Those
printers are also probably the least used printers on campus.
