As a personal user of Second Life (SL), I'm familiar with a lot of the quir=
ks of the various viewers. SL is in the midst of a huge OS upgrade that is=
playing havoc with the entire grid, running rolling restarts throughout th=
e grid for days on end. This is not the normal condition of the grid, it i=
s an extraordinary circumstance that will be resolved once they complete th=
e work, which should be very soon. It is inconvenient and messy if the res=
tarts occur during a class, but they usually only take a few minutes. Norm=
ally they do rolling restarts on Wednesdays at 5am and complete them by abo=
ut 10am Second Life Time (SLT) which equals Pacific Time since SL is based =
in San Francisco.

SL recently released Viewer 3 which (according to the users) is a crashy li=
ttle bugger and Viewer 2, Firestorm or Phoenix 1.5.2.1185 is recommended in=
stead until it is revised. All these changes are to support a new technolo=
gy called "mesh" which is quite revolutionary and will change the "face" of=
SL quite a bit, but it is not in common use as yet and the older viewers w=
ill work just fine for now. Items that are mesh will appear as a multicol=
ored basic shape (known as a prim or primitive). Phoenix is used by over 6=
0% of SL users because of its ease of use, stability and low crash rate.

Since SL is a virtual world, the quality of the video card and driver is ke=
y to the SL experience. A high quality video card and the latest drivers w=
ill fix many SL issues, as will a fast internet connection.

Enjoy - it's a great place to meet people from all over the world.

Thanks!

Stuart,

Which Dell model were you using the program on? I'm curious If it was a Del=
l OptiPlex 755. Second Life worked fine on some of our older 755's, but aft=
er the most recent Second Life update, the program will no longer run on th=
ese machines. We may just need to roll back to the previous version.

Thanks for the info!

Yes, we had it installed for a "class" last semester, and experienced crash=
es after launch.
It is very picky about video driver.
I think I ended up getting the very latest driver direct from Intel rather =
than from Dell which fixed the problem.

Hello all,

I was wondering if any of you use the program Second Life? If so, have you =

Thank you all very much for all you do!
