I understand about wanting to leave it open, but the reason I'm inclined to keep the question more restrictive is to avoid having the candidate bring up things I don't want to talk about in an interview. I've had candidates with a question like that who have talked about religion ("I was such a screwup until I started going to Campus Crusade for Christ") - which is all fine and good, but I don't want to talk about your religious choices in a job interview. You end up having to shut the question down, and it becomes not useful. My 1.5 cents, of course :-)
