I like those questions, but when interviewing, I typically tag team with my=
 director.
She asks the less technical questions such as

1. 'Given scenario x' how would you respond?

2. Where do you go to find technical information?

3. What are your favorite websites?

I will typically draw up a technical scenario that may have different answe=
rs and ask them to step me through troubleshooting. Sometime I interrupt an=
d say, but this is what I am experiencing (as if I am the user), and then I=
let him or her respond accordingly.

E.g. I am surfing the Internet when all of a sudden I can't get to 'the Int=
ernet'. What is wrong?

I find it to be a good way to gauge their thinking and see if they latch on=
to any dangling carrots that lead them to my answer or if they just go off=
on a tangent that perhaps gets them to the answer in a roundabout way or t=
hey just never get there at all.

I am really looking for points and thought processes, not always the correc=
t answer.

In my example above, I am looking for things such as knowledge of DNS, try =
a website by IP (if one is memorized or known; An engineer working for me s=
hould always know at least one of our website IPs). Does he or she know how=
to use nslookup. How to check for my own IP address on the client. How to =
ping, check that the network is still connected via the OS tools, when I sa=
y 'the Internet' do I really mean the Internet is down or is campus connect=
ivity out as well?

If I get warm fuzzies, then the candidate is likely to obtain a second inte=
rview where I will ask more technical questions and search for deeper knowl=
edge and understanding depending upon what the position calls for. E.g. I a=
m not going to ask a lot of networking questions if the candidate is applyi=
ng for an e-mail administration position, but that doesn't mean there won't=
 be a couple.

Hi,
These questions were aimed at a "jack of all trades" type help desk positio=
n we have on the books. It has been a good way to make a first cut for us..=
.

  1. Describe the differences between Plain Text and HTML e-mail and the a=
ssociated advantages and disadvantages.
  2. What role does the registry play in Windows?
  3. Imagine you are working at the Help Desk and receive a call from a cl=
ient stating "My Internet is broken". Pretend I am the client, and help me =
troubleshoot the issue.
  4. How would you deal with a forgotten BIOS password?
  5. Describe the differences between IMAP and POP e-mail and the associat=
ed advantages and disadvantages.
  6. What is a foreign key and how could it be used?
  7. Help the search committee understand the depth and detail of your tec=
hnical knowledge by explaining to us what happens behind the scenes when yo=
u type www.google.com<http://www.google.com/> into a web browser.
  8. Describe public / private key encryption and what you might use it fo=
r.
  9. What is the difference between TCP and UDP. When / why to use one or =
the other?
  10. Please explain the similarities and differences between hubs, switche=
s, and routers.
