I have always thought that it was a mistake to turn a job interview
into a technology pop quiz.
I have always approached these interviews with the idea in mind that if
I find someone with a outstanding work ethic, they will learn the
technology.
My questions are more geared toward, what kind of things have they done
they did NOT require management or supervisor input. Did they find a
unknown problem, solve it in a creative and realistic way and THEN
inform management. Someone with that kind of initiative will not only
learn the technology required, but probably more than required.
ex. What kind of things did you do that did NOT require management
attention?

Hi,
These questions were aimed at a "jack of all trades" type help desk
position we have on the books. It has been a good way to make a first
cut for us...
1. Describe the differences between Plain Text and HTML e-mail
and the associated advantages and disadvantages.
2. What role does the registry play in Windows?
3. Imagine you are working at the Help Desk and receive a call
from a client stating “My Internet is broken”. Pretend I am the client,
and help me troubleshoot the issue.
4. How would you deal with a forgotten BIOS password?
5. Describe the differences between IMAP and POP e-mail and the
associated advantages and disadvantages.
6. What is a foreign key and how could it be used?
7. Help the search committee understand the depth and detail of
your technical knowledge by explaining to us what happens behind the
scenes when you type www.google.com ( http://www.google.com/ ) into a
web browser.
8. Describe public / private key encryption and what you might
use it for.
9. What is the difference between TCP and UDP. When / why to use
one or the other?
10. Please explain the similarities and differences between
hubs, switches, and routers.

Does anyone have a set of interview questions that you would ask of a
candidate for a Network and Systems Administrator position that you are
willing to share? I have not interviewed candidates for this job in a
quite a while. BTW, if any of you are interested in moving to or
relocating within Montana, contact me off list.
