We have Symantec Endpoint Protection for Macs. I hate to say it, but it is=
pretty good. Aside from being resource heavy it catches a lot of windows =
viruses on flash drives and in emails, alerting that person to the danger t=
hat particular shared resource. That is one thing I will probably miss whe=
n we kill our contract. A lot of the freebies for mac only scan for threat=
s to the Mac OS.
Also, to clear things up, we don't require Symantec for students. We just =
advertise it heavily and many students and parents don't buy their own prot=
ection because of our PR to use the school's. We advertise it as "enterpri=
se protection" and highlight the benefits of having the on-campus managemen=
t server which pushes updates every two hours as opposed to the standalone =
product's daily update. We've done really well at it, and I think it has h=
elped people who tend to ignore the renewal requests from the stock AV on t=
heir system. However, now I see that we've dug ourselves a bit of a ditch =
by building it up so much. If we suddenly switch, it may raise some trust =
questions. That's my main concern with the PR campign.
Derek, have you had the misfortune of using Cleanwipe versions 1 through 83=
4,729,849,28 on top of the Norton removal tool? NoNav? Internet Security =
Removal tool? Manually crawling through the registry for an hour and delet=
ing Symantec leftovers? Our share folder with the removal tools looks like=
a sock drawer, you never find one that actually matches what you're lookin=
g for. Yeah, their uninstaller is abysmal, and every semester we have one =
that will completely corrupt windows to the point of no return, requiring a=
format.
Thanks everyone for your answers so far.

Do any of you require that Macs have anti-virus software? Our policy curren=
tly requires it for all. We're on McAfee now and offer it to students (both=
for Windows and OS X).

Subject: Re: [RESNET-L] Student Antivirus Replacement Project
Andy,
Respones inline...
1. What did/would you move to?
We moved to Forefront for Faculty/Staff (which our license currently includ=
es). Students can run whatever they want or if they need one, we recommend=
Microsoft Security Essentials as a freebie.
2. How do you handle the PR campaign to the students to get them to switch=
? We don't want to tell them we've been giving them a bad product that we =
paid for for the last few years, but we still want them to switch. Also, f=
aculty/staff may not make the switch at the same time, so we don't want the=
m to see the ads and make a fuss over not getting the best product.
We did not do a PR campaign per se. We stopped using Cisco Clean Access wh=
ich was forcing select AV clients. We were behind at least two versions an=
d the cost was just too high. We went with Palo Alto for a network protect=
ion device. There is no checking for AV at this point. Students are promp=
ted for user ID and password on a webpage before they can get on the intern=
et.
3. Do you have any gripes over Symantec you'd like to share?
Symantec, was slow in my opinion from the previous college that I worked at=
. The install/uninstall did not work as advertised. (Say hello to Norton R=
emoval Tool!) We switched off from Mcafee here at MBC as the price kept go=
ing up and the performance kept going down. It was a waste of time and mon=
ey.
Hope that helps,
Derek
