We stopped providing AV for students two years ago. When they register on the network, and they don't have AV, we provide a link to the Microsoft Security Essentials download. We also allow them to use other AV products. Seems to work just fine for us.

For faculty and staff we still purchase Mcafee licenses.

Subject: Student Antivirus Replacement Project

I'm starting a project to remove Symantec as our provided antivirus solution for our students. The product, as inexpensive as it is to us under state contract, is still not worth the price and the product's effectiveness is my primary concern. Due to the budget situation we would likely have to move to a cheap to free replacement such as Microsoft Security Essentials, Forefront (which our license currently includes), or some other free variant. I'm looking for any input people can give, such as:

1. What did/would you move to?

2. How do you handle the PR campaign to the students to get them to switch? We don't want to tell them we've been giving them a bad product that we paid for for the last few years, but we still want them to switch. Also, faculty/staff may not make the switch at the same time, so we don't want them to see the ads and make a fuss over not getting the best product.

3. Do you have any gripes over Symantec you'd like to share?

Any input would be appreciated.
