I've checked with Microsoft before. If you do any distribution through an =
institution, they are going to require that you use ForeFront instead of Se=
curity Essentials. We currently use Symantec Endpoint Security and have fo=
r a decade. Through our state contract it is dirt cheap, like $1 per head =
with ultimate flexibility in distribution.

I wish I could tell you it was better than nothing, but I'm starting to dou=
bt that. Symantec has serious issues with their software which is becoming=
transparent through their entire business model. The protection is absolu=
tely pathetic, the footprint is huge and resource heavy, and the sheer inst=
allation causes windows problems regularly. It is the bane if my existence=
(not to be blunt :)). We used to tell our students it is "an enterprise p=
roduct and is more robust protection than anything you get at BestBuy", but=
that would be lying now. Symantec just released SEP 12 and when we form a=
project committee to do the upgrade I will be voting not to upgrade at all=
and to just switch to a different product. MSCE has been our standard bac=
kup for if a Symantec installation completely borks the machine or just won=
't install, which happens at least a few times a month.

This is a tricky situation because you can't trust that they will go out an=
d install a product on their own, but you don't want to fork over the $$ to=
get something licensed. We're asking those questions too. Just weigh whi=
ch is more important to you.

Good morning!
We recently had a license change and we no longer have a license for an ant=
ivirus/antimalware program to put on our laptop program machines - we sell =
them with a prepared Bucknell image, and if they need to be reimaged here a=
t our desk, we put an updated image on them.
I know a lot of schools simply point their students to online installers fo=
r various free programs, but we're looking to license a product that we can=
install on student computers.
I'd like to hear from schools about what programs they're using and how muc=
h they might cost. Thanks -
